PreS-K—What happens when a blue, denim knee patch escapes the pants of a child? So begins the enchanting journey of Jocelyn's wordless board book for tots. Thread unravels from the denim patch and beckons readers to turn the page. From there, a game of search and find begins as the denim patch takes cover in creative forms and settings. Among other things, the patch becomes a diamond in an ornate stained-glass window design, a lens in a pair of 3-D glasses at a movie theater, and the tag of a dog's collar, before settling into an infant's patchwork quilt. Jocelyn's mixed-media illustrations feature paper collage, intricate paper cuts, and textured elements like sandpaper and ribbon. While the use of such materials adds high visual interest to the story, the patch is sometimes a challenge to identify.
VERDICT Readers will enjoy composing their own stories as the blue patch travels from page to page. A good purchase for most libraries.
