Old Wounds

Gr 9 Up–In a satisfying, fresh take on a classic horror film scenario, two trans teens are stranded in a small town and ensnared by locals who plan to sacrifice them to a demon that targets girls. Max and Erin used to be everything to each other, until Max abruptly ended things two years ago, a decision Erin still doesn’t understand. However, when Max asks Erin to run away with him after graduation, she agrees. As the only other out trans teen in a small Ohio town, Erin understands the everyday existential threat of intolerant parents, looming healthcare restrictions, and random acts of violence. Ditching their cell phones and relying on cash means they’re harder to trace, but it also means that they have limited resources and nowhere to turn when their car breaks down and the locals seize upon Erin as their chosen sacrifice. Chaos ensues when their would-be captors are stymied by Max and Erin’s gender identities and are forced to reckon with the power and perseverance of two kids who have been forced to fight for survival their entire lives. While Kisner’s characterization of Max and Erin is incredibly complex and delivers a compassionate look at their relationship and differing perspectives, the mystery surrounding the town, the captors, and the demon are only painted in very broad strokes, leaving many questions unanswered. Similarly, a central conflict with Max’s parents is never revisited.
