PreS-Gr 1–With rhyming text, vibrant illustrations, and small-scale cut-outs that little fingers will love, this book introduces young readers to a variety of creatures that live in the ocean. Each page contains two simple lines that rhyme, and each two-page spread captures one animal or thought. For example, “Gleaming and sparkling, the coral sea/Is a place of magical mystery./As the ocean’s tides ebb and flow,/ A secret world lies deep below.” Children will be introduced to a variety of marine creatures: lionfish, sea horses, puffer fish, great white sharks, dolphins, humpback whales, and manatees. The narrative jumps somewhat randomly between creatures that live near a coral reef and those that are dwellers of the open ocean.
VERDICT With stylized illustrations that really pop, this colorful book will introduce children to the creatures of our beautiful ocean but cannot replace more scientifically based nonfiction titles
