PreS-Gr 1–Alice tries to coax her new friend Zara into a hug, but Zara politely refuses each time. When Alice gets angry, Zara explains that she doesn’t feel like hugging. The girls compromise by giving each other high fives. Although very different, Zara and Alice are both charming. While many stories portray non-huggers as grumpy, Prischmann refreshingly depicts Zara as gracious, sweet, and caring, and the conclusion emphasizes that friendship is above all about respect. The illustrations are eye-catching and vibrant, with bold colors and distinct character designs.
VERDICT Prischmann offers a lighthearted take on consent and body autonomy.
