Gr 3-5–Bowie delivers a lighthearted, silly sequel in the “Nina Peanut” series. After gaining and losing an audience on an online video sharing website called Boogletoob, Nina is ready to tackle her next challenge: running for school president. However, her biggest opponent in the school race is her frenemy Megan, who ruined her reputation by posting a humiliating video that cost Nina her followers. While Nina is brainstorming how she can beat Megan, her teacher brings in old artifacts from a nearby museum. Nina notices strange things happening around an old shoe that once belonged to a woman from the 19th century and realizes that the mystery of this shoe could be the key to winning the election and possibly saving a ghost who is trapped in a shoe. Bowie explores friendship through the innocent lens of childhood, depicting the joys and heartaches of navigating relationships where kindness, snarkiness, and competition constantly intertwine. Readers may connect with Nina and find her funny, while also recognizing the Megans they know in their own lives.
VERDICT A fun—if somewhat fluffy—read that will likely appeal to fans of the “Dork Diaries” series by Rachel Renée Russell. A decent addition for elementary libraries looking for more humorous graphic novels to add to their collections.
