Neecy and Nay Nay and the Glitter Girls

Gr 2-4–This second “Neecy and Nay Nay” novel offers readers a character-driven plot mixed with humor. Twins Neecy and Nay Nay love being part of the Glitter Girls. Working on their Make A Difference Badges, the two want to raise $1,000 to help Mr. Otis get new dentures. To do so, the Glitter Girls decide to hold a community-wide donation drive to reach their goal. When they’re finished with the drive, however, they only have half the money they need. Will they find a way to help Mr. Otis get his new set of teeth? The characters in this book are not complex but quite authentic. The off-plot high jinks are humorous and draw readers into the story, and the text is appropriate for the early chapter book audience. Henderson’s illustrations are beautifully detailed black-and-white sketches that complement the text well. The twins are Black; other characters are a diverse range of skin tones and identities. Included is a list of new words and definitions as well as a fun, cheap craft project.
