PreS-Gr 2—With an aptitude for drama and excellent vocabulary, Mabel returns for more misadventures. The French bulldog warns readers that the trouble that follows is really not her fault. It turns out that the pup's problems are caused by her need for glasses. It's no surprise that Mabel welcomes a new opportunity to accessorize, but her parents decide that contacts are more practical for an active girl like her. Lessons learned: "sleepovers are potentially fraught with danger," "life is full of surprises," and young ones can always count on their friends and family "to help [them] out when [they] don't see things clearly." The lively digital artwork is perfect for the lighthearted tone.
VERDICT An enjoyable read-aloud; kids may gain a more positive perspective on sporting spectacles from the story as well.

Spoiled little rich dog Mabel's vision problems cause various comical misunderstandings until her human "parents" finally take her to a doggy optometrist. This Mabel story is more transparently purposeful than its predecessor (Naughty Mabel), but the authors' wit survives (Mabel's seventy-year-old neighbor is "490 in dog years"), as do Krall's cheeky visuals (don't miss Martha Stewart as seen in Mabel's triple vision).
