PreS-Gr 2–A young boy with blonde hair and tan skin celebrates two Christmases for the first time when his parents separate. Told from the boy’s point of view, the story addresses changes that divorce brings, while providing comfort and positivity. The boy’s parents create new, if separate, traditions for the holiday, allowing him to feel safe and loved while reassuring him that they both love him. Ciccio gives children a voice through the boy, using him to help readers process big feelings with age-appropriate responses. When told that he will have two Christmases and two Christmas trees, the boy answers, “I just want one. Ours was perfect.” He expresses concern about a family photo ornament, and if Santa will know where to find him. The parents are kind to one another in the boy’s presence and spend Christmas day together with him. As they navigate a new landscape, the boy feels “happy and sad all at once” and cries when memories arise. Back matter provides helpful advice and resources.
VERDICT This sensitive book addresses family change during an emotional time of year. A recommended purchase for social-emotional collections.
