K-Gr 2–A disgruntled girl writes a letter of complaint to her annoying little sister, but softens, only just, before she finishes her letter. Humorously childlike line drawings on white or solid grounds of color detail the allegations against a sister who was most probably rejected by aliens, talks too much, clings too much, bites, scribbles on big sister’s books, steals stickers to put on the cat, and even gets to have chicken pox at the same time. Sheesh! How unfair! Then again, the sisters look more like each other than anyone else in the family and always have each other to fight or play with. So big sister signs off with lots of love and a P.S. not to ever touch her stuff again. There is some quirky fun here. The carefully drawn favorite doll on horseback with her head missing is a hoot, and the assortment of illustration techniques is entertaining. But the change of heart comes too abruptly after such a long list of infractions and isn’t convincing.
VERDICT Additional purchase only; this is a comically believable depiction of the mixed emotions of older siblings until its unsatisfying conclusion.
