PreS-Gr 3–This concept book for early readers offers an exploration of feelings and acceptance. Rather than a linear narrative, each spread centers on a specific feeling. Rhyming verse includes kid-friendly examples of circumstances that may cause a specific emotion. These examples include sadness, joy, loneliness, anger, embarrassment, fright, and more. Each verse ends in a statement, demonstrating how to communicate feelings, that begins with “I feel” and ends with “and that’s okay!” to encourage the acceptance of those feelings. Bright colors are used to create a variety of backgrounds with children of various skin tones, whose facial expressions depict the emotion on their spread.
VERDICT Use this in the classroom to teach children to recognize, articulate, and embrace emotions.
