K-Gr 2—These small-format titles use short declarative sentences to convey basic information about various insects. Concentrating on physical characteristics and diet, they sometimes include a few details about where the creatures live. Curiously, the bugs are not identified as insects except by implication in Dragonflies, which notes that they "eat other insects." Close-up photos form the backdrops for the simple text, but some extreme close-up views are more confusing than informative. Budding entomologists drawn to the books may gain reading practice, but they will need other titles to satisfy their curiosity.
Each book presents simple facts about an insect, with an emphasis on anatomy. Surprisingly, the term insect is only used to describe what a couple of the creatures eat--not what they are. Some of the stock photos are blurry, and some could use labels to more clearly identify the body parts described in the text. Glos. Review covers these Bug Books titles: Busy Bumblebees, Dashing Dragonflies, Fluttering Butterflies, and Lucky Ladybugs.
