Gr 3–5—Venom, constriction, and the ability to glide are some of the attributes highlighted in this series of snake profiles. The books also present more general information.
King Cobra, for example, focuses on fangs, jaws, and venom, but also covers habitat, predators, and other topics. Four of the titles examine single species, while
Flying Snakes and
Pit Viper look at multiple species within broader groups. There are plenty of fascinating facts, mostly described in a straightforward manner. Throughout the series, the writing is not always as smooth as it could be and the endings of some of the titles are rather abrupt. The use of black backgrounds for text and some of the images works well. Photograph size ranges from an entire spread to smaller panels and spot images, providing useful visual examples. Inset text boxes include additional facts and a recurring "fact or fiction" feature.
VERDICT Solid additions to most nonfiction collections on a high-interest topic.
