Gr 4–8—This French-made animated series set in Paris features a strong female protagonist with a male sidekick. Marinette and Adrien are regular teens with age-appropriate issues such as bonding with parents, making friends, and dealing with secret crushes—until there's a villain to tame. Hawk Moth unleashes evil through black moths that transform regular people into supervillains. Ladybug (Marinette) and Cat Noir (Adrien) must use their superpowers (gained through their magical pets) to help keep the streets safe. This collection will appeal to fans of anime, especially magical girl anime and manga. Rushed pacing and lack of a cohesive story line (episodes are not sequential) may be disorienting for some viewers. However, this disc is only a partial sampling of the first season.
VERDICT Overall, this is a unique collection of international animation with big adventure, punny wordplay, and minimal violence.
