K-Gr 3—A sweet book about the struggle of being a middle child. Miles realizes that he doesn't have any trophies on his mantle (his older and younger brothers each have a number of their own). Upset by this, Miles searches for something at which he excels. With his grandfather's help, he cycles through art, music, and architecture, desperately seeking something that will win him a trophy. Eventually, the title character reveals his true strength in his advanced knowledge of dinosaurs, but Miles worries that this isn't something he can win a trophy for. Grandpa reassures him that if you do what you love, you will be happy, and that is what is most important. Readers will benefit from the message of the work. The illustrations are crisp, focused, and occasionally humorous, such as when Miles decides to try painting and suddenly appears in a beret, with a mustache. While the text is accessible, the inconsistent variation between black and red text is not always clear.
VERDICT A purposeful yet kind story, best suited for where social skill-building books are in demand.
