Gr 1-3–Andy Snowden lives at the North Pole and attends Elf Academy. He knows everything there is to know about the Elf Academy, and because of that, one of his favorite teachers, Ms. Dow, asks him to look after the new students, who happen to be her niece and nephew Jane and Trevor. But things don’t go as planned; Jane and Trevor love to cause trouble and blame it on Andy and the other students. Can Andy stop their mischievous ways? The well-written plot is simple but engaging, and the worldbuilding is unique, believable, and magical. Katz’s characters are diverse, and over the arc of the book and the series, they continue to develop by being likeable and drawing readers into Andy’s world. Detailed, imaginative illustrations help bring the plot to life, and parents and teachers will appreciate the discussion questions. Although this is the fourth book in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone.
VERDICT Those who like fantasy, Santa, the North Pole, and magic will enjoy this book, which suits book clubs or independent reading equally.
