K-Gr 2—MegaCityVille's resident heroes have their habits, abilities, and crime-fighting acumen detailed in these two volumes in the series, translated here from French. In
Mega Wolf, the titular hero lifts weights, showers (still in his costume, with a pink bath mitt), and rescues "the little girl in red" from Mosquito Man. Mega Mouse's book describes how she lives on Cheddar Street and is the strongest of the Mega Heroes, and details her rescue of schoolchildren, again from the ever-villainous Mosquito Man. While some families may object to the violence of Mega Wolf's fighting and Mega Mouse's "super disintegrating gun," others will enjoy the wackiness and comics-style action and adventure. The series follows many superhero tropes with a nudge and a wink; the children whom Mega Mouse rescues are wearing Mega Mouse print hats and shirts. Each of the small, square books ends with a silly secret about the featured hero, begging readers not to tell. Simple line drawings with flat washes of color help convey the story and provide humor along with the exaggerated text.
VERDICT Fun additions likely to appeal to fans of Charise Mericle Harper's Wedgieman or Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants.
