K-Gr 3—A young girl, Mira, loves art and shares it, giving some of her drawings to neighbors. But what good is her art, really, in such a gray and uninspiring place? Then Mira meets a real artist, a muralist who is determined to change her drab neighborhood. Soon everyone is involved, creating lively murals as music and dance and color fill the streets. With this short film based on their book, authors F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell have crafted a joyous homage to the transformative power of art and community. Narrated with a light accent by Adriana Sananes, this is a delightful story. Even better, the bonus feature discusses how Rafael López and his wife, Candice, encouraged community support for the Urban Art Trail, which, through murals, mosaics, poems, and splashes of color, transformed San Diego's East Village and has been used as a model for other cities. Rafael López's bright, friendly pictures have been simply animated for this video.
VERDICT This is an inspiring production that may encourage others to add a splash of color to their own communities.
