PreS-Gr 2—Maple and Willow are sisters who play together every day. That is, until one of them starts kindergarten. Maple's excitement about school bubbles over each day after school, and Willow is feeling left out. Willow decides to create a school of her own with her new friend, Pip (an acorn), and shares her adventures with Maple. As Willow tells Maple about all the fun she and Pip are having, Maple begins to realize that there is something special about their times together. School is great, but time with Willow is better still. Narrator Stina Nielsen does not read down to her audience by using babyish voices. Instead, the girls seem like genuine young children. The first track offers an uninterrupted reading of the story, while track 2 offers a turn-the-page reading that allows listeners with a print copy to follow along.
VERDICT As an educational tool for young readers, this audio can find a place in any preschool through second grade classroom. ["Fall into this lovely addition as sisters adjust to the excitement and the changes of a new year ahead": SLJ 8/15 review of the Nancy Paulsen book.]
