Gr 7–10—Jennifer Hayes is flying into the circus world. Since she was a small child, her dream has always been to fly trapeze. During summer vacation, she finally has the chance to experience her dream first hand. A weeklong circus summer camp is sure to bring out her natural trapeze talent. Unfortunately, not everything is going as planned. Jennifer has met a couple of new friends and formed a crush on a fellow trapeze artist, Branden, but her sudden fear of heights has left her grounded.
Love Is in the Air has everything many teens want in a light read: drama, good friends, the requisite mean girl, and, of course, a crush to make every situation super awkward. The circus setting is vibrantly described. There is a great camaraderie among Jennifer and her fellow campers as they challenge themselves with rehearsals, team-building activities, and plenty of hard work. Jennifer blossoms while learning juggling and working with her partner to perfect their routine. Her confidence grows under the tutelage of the coaches and her roommate, Riley. This is a fast-paced story with light laughs and plenty of awkward flirting. Things go no further than a kiss, making this appropriate for young teens.
VERDICT While the story is familiar, Jennifer's high-flying circus goals make this a fun purchase for libraries.
