Gr 4–7—This series uses short text blocks against colorful spreads to engage readers. Text boxes with contrasting colors often provide short biographies or briefs on related topics, but many simply continue the flow of the main narrative. Photographs and other illustrations abound. Images appear as backgrounds to many pages, as well as artfully arranged across each spread, though at times photos do not sync well with the accompanying text.
Revolutionary War is especially well presented, integrating a range of period paintings, contemporary photos of reenactors, maps, and other types of illustration, such as colonial currency. A few topics broach territory that readers will find difficult, particularly the photos of lynchings in
Civil Rights Movement.
VERDICT Though no sources are provided and back matter is thin, these titles will serve well for providing background for students.
