And when he does manage to get aloft, he learns why it's important to follow his mother's rules about flying. Lost in the woods, he becomes "Flip, Flap, Frightened!" Bell's pencil, watercolor, and digital illustrations include landscapes of dense forest (lit up by fireflies) and fog-covered mountains. This offering balances a child's need for independence and the reasons for parental guidelines in a sweet, engaging way.
VERDICT The expressive characters and the use of alliteration throughout make for an entertaining and interactive read-aloud.

After flopping and flapping, a young dragon finally achieves his first flight. But he breaks Mama's rules (don't fly too high, too far, or without Mama), which results in his crash-landing in unfamiliar territory. After a nervous-making moment, ever-watchful Mama rescues him. Digitally manipulated pencil and watercolor illustrations feature round-headed, friendly-faced dragons with ample child appeal. Little Wing's pride in his accomplishment, followed by anxiety, followed by reassurance from Mama rings true.
