Let’s Split Up

Scholastic. Sept. 2025. 352p.
Gr 8 Up–Whenever there’s a story about a spooky mansion in a small town, someone is probably about to be murdered. This novel opens with that always-entertaining trope. As the sole urban legend in the town of Sanera, Carrington Manor is a place everyone knows about and avoids. When two teens are murdered, the town swings into action with curfews and worried parents. The police are useless, so Jock Cam, brainy Jonesy, friendly empath Amber, and new girl Buffy swing into action, determined to make sure no one else dies. Fun mystery stories involving teens always do well with many audiences, and this title should be no exception. The narrative adeptly keeps the action flowing, while also teasing and foreshadowing the climax. Mystery fans will find themselves trying to solve the puzzle before the four friends do. With the sequel being released later this year, and spooky season on the horizon, this title should jump off shelves.
VERDICT If the names were changed, this could be the origin story for the Scooby Gang. Wood has reimagined Mystery Inc., for a whole new generation.
