K-Gr 2—A tale of a bunny who gets too much of a good thing. This translation of the 2013 Caldecott Honor Book
Creepy Carrots (S. & S., 2012) is sure to get picked up because of the iconic cover. The monochromatic illustrations with the pop of orange for the carrots help create the ominous tone of the story as the bunny Jasper fears that the carrots are now following him. Jasper has indulged too much from the carrot field, taking carrots every chance he got. Now he thinks they are after him! Every time he thinks he sees them, it turns out to be something else—or can it be that the carrots are playing mind tricks on him? Jasper is wrapped up in despair until he concocts a plan to make the carrots stay put in their garden plot. This Spanish edition will be enjoyed by young readers with wild imaginations and could be used to discuss fear of the dark.
VERDICT A fun read-aloud for scary storytimes.
