K-Gr 4–This charming Spanish-language picture book about an independent princess with a mind of her own is a fun twist on the classic tale of a princess in a dragon’s lair. The king calls upon his knights to rescue the princess from the dragon. One by one, each knight goes to save her, but she refuses to leave. She doesn’t want to be saved and instead chooses to go on her own adventures. Illustrations appear to be watercolor and ink. Soft colors add to the fairy-tale theme. Most characters are light-skinned, while some of the princes have darker tones. A large portion of the pages are background, showing the large size of the dragon. The writing emphasizes the nature of the characters; the princess’s strong-willed personality shines through. There is a lot of dialogue, and it is sometimes difficult to tell which character is speaking. However, with a run-through, this would be an excellent book to read out loud at story time.
VERDICT This modern twist on classic themes will resonate with families looking for picture books that challenge traditional gender norms. This is a general purchase for any Spanish-language children’s collection.
