PreS-Gr 2–Keyana is a little girl who thinks BIG! She wants to throw a fabulous backyard party for her family, and she has an impressive to-do list, so she reluctantly accepts some help from her mother, father, and younger brother. Her whole family arrives: aunts, uncles, grandparents—even her five favorite cousins!—but after a smooth beginning, things start going haywire, and Keyana discovers that she needs to go with the flow and welcome some help to make the most memorable night ever take place. In a delightful story about Black child joy and family, Tarpley gives us an adorable and dynamic main character in Keyana, who has presence and confidence aplenty. The digital and watercolor illustrations are colorful and concentrate on familial affection; members are close and enjoy time with each other. Endpapers display a wall of framed family photos, including one child’s drawing. Details in the artwork will delight readers, from Keyana’s checklist at the beginning of the story to her doll, whose outfits match Keyana’s, right down to her sleeping bonnet.
VERDICT A sweet story of family, resilience, and the need for a strong Plan B, this is a recommended purchase for collections needing a little more Black joy on the shelves.
