PreS-Gr 1–This volume in the “It’s Not Easy Being” series introduces readers to a small red squirrel leprechaun who is not happy about his lot in life. He has big ears and no friends, since the other forest creatures are only interested in his pot of gold. “‘I DO NOT want to be a leprechaun!’ he said,” and he goes in search of something better. He first encounters a frog fairy, which looks like a wonderful creature to be since fairies can fly. And so, the leprechaun turns himself into a fairy. There is only one problem with that—he quickly remembers he’s afraid of heights. He next comes across a carpenter and decides it would be exciting to create structures. However, after building for a while, he decides he never wants to work that hard. Each occupation has its drawbacks until he meets a sad princess and realizes that just by being himself, he has found an occupation for which he is most suited. Large, brightly colored illustrations with much movement and facial expressions add to the fun. As a bonus, readers will enjoy looking for the bespectacled caterpillar that accompanies the leprechaun and is featured on many pages throughout.
VERDICT A humorous holiday tale with a message of self-acceptance for St. Patrick’s Day reading.
