Gr 8 Up–Corsen delivers an absolute standout young adult Sapphic sports romance that sees Charlie Porter, a driven hockey star, getting benched after a passionate blow-up and who later finds herself paired with Alexa Goldstein, an Olympic figure skating hopeful in need of a temporary partner. What starts off as an enemies-to-lovers situation and partnership of convenience quickly turns into something deeper that has Charlie questioning just where her priorities lie as she finds herself falling hard for Alexa. Shelan does an incredibly narrates both female main characters, making their voices sound distinct with excellent emotion and verve. The author skillfully invites readers into the world of competitive sports and all the sacrifices young athletes must make to follow their dreams. Recommended for fans of books like
She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlan,
All’s Fair in Love and Field Hockey by Kit Rosewater, or the
Cutting Edge movie.
VERDICT A strong addition for library collections looking to expand their Sapphic sports and rom-com offerings.
