In the Palm of My Hand

PreS-Gr 2–This is a wonderful story showing kids how to have an appreciation of the wonders of nature, their imagination, and their families. A first-person point of view shows a child experiencing the magic of nature through various stages of life by holding parts of it in their hands. Throughout a journey that marvels that a seed can grow into a forest and a caterpillar turn into a butterfly, readers are eventually pulled into the power of imagination fueled by nature itself. An appreciation of nature with family adds a nice touch before the revelation that the possibilities are endless as a concluding note. This is an excellent addition to libraries that have an active children’s programming calendar, especially one that emphasizes tactile experiences which this book so colorfully explores. The overarching theme of a child’s endless need to know more is a welcome message to all curious kids, particularly those who are active in the outdoors.
