I'm Brave!

K-Gr 3—This latest in the series of transportation-themed picture books by Kate and Jim McMullan features a big red fire truck that is confident and cool. Kids will love the hip text, as the brave and gallant engine asks, "Wanna see what I'm packin'?" He offers a brief introduction to firefighting tools until a 911 call comes in, and he flies into action. The watercolor illustrations are bold and colorful and suggest movement and energy. Jonathan Banks's narration is gruff but compelling, and the upbeat musical score has a fiery momentum that carries the story along and makes this visual interpretation educational and entertaining. The DVD also includes a 10-minute segment, introduced by author Kate McMullan and featuring New York City firefighter Jim Wind. He gives viewers a real-life look at a fire truck and the tools that are mentioned in the story. Kids will enjoy seeing the actual equipment as well as hearing how they are used to help fight fires.
