PreS-Gr 2–In this whimsical take on the seasons, a young boy’s joy in summer is deflated when he hears it does not last forever. He enjoys going to the pool, staying in the water for a long time, and only wants to come out to eat ice cream. His older sister administers the hard truth: Autumn will come, stealing the leaves from the trees, and then it will be dreary, rainy, snowy winter. The young boy is at first sad, before discovering the wonders of that season: warm drinks, ice skating, and sleigh rides. Ciraolo’s pictures convey the various changes of the seasons with images of the colorful variety of ice cream, the swimming pool the child is in, the depiction of the dark clouds, and the leaves falling from the trees drawn so realistically.
VERDICT Although this is an additional purchase, children will love anticipating the boy’s change of heart.
