K-Gr 2–A book that encourages readers to listen to more than just the sounds of waves. The kids who explore the beach listen to crabs, seagulls, even the sand itself. Onomatopoeic words introduce each new subject, making this book a persuasive read-aloud; however, some of the sounds are a stretch to match with their subjects. Also, the author chooses to use a heart icon instead of the word “love” on the final page. No other pictographs are used. The children have brown skin; one of their accompanying adults is Black, with dark hair, and the other is white, with red hair. Everyone has friendly, smiling faces, even the animals. The illustrations take a unique approach by not setting this beach book in a hot summer season; the characters wear long pants and jackets as they explore the rocky shores. Coral, tide pools, and a coastal sunset are all lovingly rendered.
VERDICT A love letter to an autumnal beach and a charming read-aloud, but not essential.
