Gr 1–4— Narrator Bahni Turpin leads the viewer through each season as a little girl outgrows her favorite dress. Fortunately when the worst happens to her favorite things, her crafty mother is ready with a creative solution—"snip snip, sew sew," and the dress becomes a shirt, skirt, scarf, pair of socks, hair bow, and eventually a treasured memory. Through the creativity and inventiveness of her mother, the youngster learns she doesn't need to make mountains out of molehills when she can make "molehills out of mountains" instead. This animated adaptation of the picture book by Boni Ashburn (Abrams, 2011) is structured around days of the week, the passing of seasons, and themes of growing up.
VERDICT This is an excellent illustration of the importance of being resourceful. It lends itself well to before-and-after viewing classroom activities, such as recycled crafts and writing prompts.
