Gr 1–3—Humphrey, the helpful classroom pet introduced in
The World According to Humphrey (Putnam, 2004) and who appears in subsequent titles, is featured in a shorter, illustrated tale. In this installment, the hamster attempts to make Richie's science project a success while avoiding his boisterous puppy. This title has the same characters, humorous action, and gentle tone of the original, but the large print, short chapters, and numerous cartoon-style illustrations make this one suitable for readers new to chapter books. The children in Humphrey's class are diverse, and the appealing story contains multiple STEM tie-ins, including animal facts and science project tips. A solid purchase that will extend Humphrey's popularity to younger readers.—
Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public LibraryThis is a new early-chapter-book spinoff series from the middle-grade novels. Humphrey is excited to get his own hamster car and race his friend Winky in front of Mrs. Brisbane's class (Wheely). He wants to help Richie with his science project, but he's not happy to meet Richie's energetic puppy (Playful). Welcoming illustrations are scattered generously. Review covers these titles: Humphrey's Playful Puppy Problem and Humphrey's Really Wheely Racing Day.
