PreS-Gr 2—This fun, quirky book uses counting to introduce the concept of weight to beginning readers. Each spread pairs two unlikely but true weights. For example, 10 ants weigh the same as one ladybug; nine ladybugs weigh the same as one grasshopper, and so on, counting down to a surprising, satisfying ending. The animals and insects covered are common: squirrels, rabbits, and ants. The repetitive text will help preschool children predict what comes next. Solid background colors in combination with illustrations, prepared using lino cuts and litho printing with digital color, make for a bold visual experience. The end pages list the approximate weight of each insect or animal, using pounds and ounces (no metric here).
VERDICT This simple picture book introduction to weight is a good choice for most public and elementary school libraries.
