Gr 2-4–As a bedtime story, a mother tells her little girl how she met her other mother. The story is fantastical, involving wizards, fairies, and trolls. One mama rides a dragon, the other is a mermaid. The conflict is frivolous and the resolution is contrived. Yet in a way, the story feels authentic; it’s rushed by a tired parent making it up on the spot. The illustration style resembles Precious Moments meets Margaret Keane, but lacks the spark of either iconography. The little girl in the story is white, along with her dragon-riding mama. Mermaid mama has dark skin and natural Black hair.
VERDICT While this type of gentle queer representation in storytelling is valuable, the story and the artwork are too unpolished to recommend for purchase.
