Hometown Treasure Hunt

Gr 3-7–Layton and his best friend Sherry love the adventure and thrill of geocaching, but they’ve already discovered all of the geocaches in their small town of Havenboro, KS. The duo solved a 100-year-old mystery in a nearby ghost town in the first installment of the series, but now the sixth graders are itching for new adventures. Naturally, they are excited to join the new Geocache Club at school, led by teacher, Mr. Burke. The club plans to make new geocaches and hide them along a hiking trail, incorporating their passion of geocaching with nature. Mysteries soon emerge—someone with the initials RBT is leaving treasures to find with the geocaches, including a ­pocketknife and a locket with a picture, and someone is leaving ­colorful knitting creations throughout town. The club may be thriving, but ­Layton is feeling left out when Sherry ­becomes friendly with other members, and he’s also feeling left out at home with his parents’ busy schedules leaving little time for him. Realistic friend and family situations will resonate with readers, as insecurities and jealousies are worked through. Book two sets the stage for continued geocaching adventures in the next book.
