Hidden Current

Gr 7 Up–Having spent the last 15 years of her life seeking admittance to the Order, Calara’s dedication has finally paid off. She is chosen to dance on the central ground to keep the island of Meriel turning. This should have been the happiest moment of Calara’s life, but the closer she gets to the Order, the more she realizes the abuse and fear that drives it. The earth speaks to Calara as she dances, and the voice she hears is that of the Maker. In the courtyard, Calara is surprised to find an avenue of escape in Brantley of Windswell. Although Brantley and Calara hold different opinions regarding how to confront the Order, they continue on an arduous path together to save Meriel, a path that creates more questions than answers regarding the Maker, the Order, and their own evolving relationship. Calara is compelled to spread the truth about the Maker, and Brantley is driven by anger to defeat the Order, all while the future of Meriel is at stake. Brantley and Calara are not afraid to put their frequently antagonistic hearts and emotions on display. Calara’s first-person account takes readers through fear, sadness, and exhilaration, and into an unknown but promising future.
