Gr 1-3–For younger or less able readers just getting into comics, this slender graphic gathering offers episodes of various lengths, colorful art, diverse casts, and plenty of jokes and action. In “No Nacho Left Behind,” for instance, Wild West raccoon sheriff Raul Rattatan and his porcine, artistically gifted sidekick Pancho get to the (literal) bottom of a snack-jacking. In “Love Conquers All,” ghost dog Sato joins Luz, a purple-haired young witch in a hoodie, for nighttime museum adventures featuring a motorized Triceratops skeleton. In eight single- or half-page segments chucked in after the four main stories, Martinez-Joffre adds a maze to trace and a page of sound effect words as changes of pace. The result is a volume consistent in visual style, but otherwise a grab bag of plots, characters, and themes.
VERDICT Newer and less practiced readers will find something to enjoy in this varied showcase.
