PreS-Gr 1–Batman and Robin make a great team when it comes to stopping evil villains. Their vehicles, Bam the Batmobile and Redbird, are also excellent when it comes to crime fighting. Redbird is a young car, so Bam takes him under his wing to teach him. He is patient as Redbird practices his moves and flips. Unfortunately, Redbird also needs to learn more before going out on a mission with Bam to stop the Joker from robbing a bank. He is eager to help and does not listen when told to stay back. Trouble ensues, and the two vehicles find themselves working together to stop the Joker and Prank, the Joker’s van. This book will draw children into the story and pique their curiosity to read more. A large amount of sight words strengthen young readers’ confidence, and the pictures are bold, colorful, and full of action. The characters have been toned down, so they are not menacing and scary, and the story teaches about friendship, cooperation, and forgiveness. There is also a small lesson about listening to those who know more than you.
VERDICT An early reader worth purchasing.
