PreS-Gr 1–Henry the duck is asked to babysit his friend Clara’s baby nephew. Henry is not sure how to babysit but takes the job. More friends appear on Henry’s doorstep and ask him to babysit, too, and suddenly a seemingly simple task becomes complicated. Henry struggles to take care of the growing number of those he is responsible for watching. The comedic cartoon illustrations show animals watching Henry through the window as he cares for the little ones, the babies messing up the house, and Henry’s increasingly exasperated facial expressions. The doorbell is used to funny effect throughout the narrative to mark a new addition to the chaos.
VERDICT Children will enjoy this playful story and totally relate to the theme of trying to keep up with and complete a difficult task.
