Gr 3-8–Marsden’s third adaptation of a children’s classic is perfectly paced and beautifully illustrated. Eternal optimist Heidi’s genuineness is revealed as she gains the love of her grandfather, a complex and taciturn loner with whom she is sent to live. But just as their bond begins to grow, Heidi is sent to Frankfurt to keep the company of Clara, who uses a wheelchair. Readers will feel Heidi’s growing homesickness for her alpine home even as she forms a friendship with Clara. Eventually, Heidi returns to the mountains where her good friend Peter, a goatherd, is thrilled to see her but is jealous of her new friends and ability to read. In her cheerful, insistent way, Heidi teaches Peter how to read. Family ties are strengthened, and friendships are strained then renewed, with Heidi as the catalyst throughout. Although set in the 1880s and very Eurocentric, the story has merits in presenting children who are strong, resilient, kind, and able to overcome a host of challenges. Marsden is paired with Italian illustrator Ofride, whose style brings color and detail to every moment. The young and cheery Heidi is brought to life with a combination of panel sizes that move the action vertically and horizontally as needed. Heidi’s keen sense of observation is echoed in many dialogue-free passages, guiding readers to pay close attention to details. Back matter includes information about the original author of Heidi, Johanna Spyri; Swiss flora, fauna, folklore, and customs; and a history of wheelchairs.
VERDICT A well-developed adventure with wide appeal for those looking for longer realistic stories. Strongly recommended for graphic novel collections.
