PreS-K–In this Spanish edition of
There Are Cats in This Book, the cats seem to be speaking directly to readers. The cats encourage children to turn the pages to view the objects and excitement on the next page. There are simple drawings of three cats—one red, one blue, and one yellow—and the environments and objects that they interact with. The drawings of the cats are cutouts pasted onto the background artwork, giving the book a three-dimensional, collage style. Speech bubbles let readers know what each cat is saying. The story is simple, and the art is spare, but the text uses larger words that younger children will need help with. There is suspense, humor, and cuteness. Although there are similar picture books where the characters speak to the reader, like Jon Stone's
The Monster at the End of This Book, this is the type of book that kids will ask for again and again.
VERDICT This is a fun title that parents and children can read and enjoy together. A general purchase for picture book shelves.
