PreS-Gr 1–Eschewing the bright colors on white backgrounds from earlier books in the “Peas” series, Baker takes full advantage of the October mood of Halloween, using black backgrounds and copious amounts of orange to distinguish this title. The book offers a list in answer to one of the most pressing Halloween questions for children: What will you be? Baker offers dozens of possibilities in rhyming text, beginning with “A wicked witch with a pointy hat, a ghost, a goblin, or the witch’s cat?” Each idea is accompanied by a Pea in said costume, supported by a wide assortment of jack-o’-lanterns. Amusing illustrative details on every page encourage careful picture reading throughout. The penultimate page, filled with dozens of Pea-shaped trick-or-treaters, invites the curious to linger in search of the aforementioned costumes amid the bustling street scene.
VERDICT Offer this fun title early in the season to inspire and support the inevitable conversation about what to be for Halloween.
