Gr 9 Up–When high school student Alex learns that she has been waitlisted for the film school of her dreams, she and six of her closest friends start a GoFundMe to remake her short film for the admissions office. Through a series of unlikely events (a famous movie star moves in next door and an anonymous donor sends $500,000 to the GoFundMe), the seven friends are offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to film their
Dracula-inspired movie at a remote castle in Romania. Once at the castle, events start to go horribly wrong, and it is clear that someone lured them to the castle under false pretenses; they must rush to figure out who (or what) is hunting them before it is too late. There are many gruesome events, however nothing is so detailed as to be overly disturbing to the average teen reader. There are also some romances that develop among the teens. The narrative is told from Alex’s perspective, with breaks for small snippets of an interview Alex has with a detective several days after the horrible events at the castle, giving readers a break from the tension of the plot, while also preparing them for what happens next. The plot is engaging, the characters relatable, and the narrative provides a satisfying conclusion. The backgrounds of the characters are not stated.
VERDICT An additional purchase where thrillers are popular, hand this to high school students looking for YA thrillers, fans of Dracula, or those who enjoyed Chelsea Pitcher’s This Lie Will Kill You.
