Gr 3–6—A collection of cartoon vignettes depicting "natural" life in and around the garden. Insects, birds, and small mammals are the stars of the story, with the author himself making an occasional appearance. Each character has a unique personality; some are friendly, but most are somewhat mean and abrasive, arguing and calling each other names such as "stupid" and "flippin' idiot." The art is simplistic and cutesy. However, the format is ideal for reluctant readers or those new to graphic novels. Some of the individual stories connect with one another to give a cohesive feeling to the whole work.
VERDICT An additional purchase for larger graphic novel collections.
