Gr 1-3–A compilation of four early reader stories following the L.O.L. (Lil Outrageous Littles) Surprise! dolls, made wildly popular for the satisfying unboxing associated with their packaging. The stories’ subjects feature the standard age-appropriate fare of friendship, pets, kindness, and being oneself. Little attention is paid to developmentally appropriate vocabulary and syntax for newly independent readers. Each book is less a story and more a laundry list of the dolls and their attributes. Brightly colored and glittery illustrations with manga-eyed characters are obvious.
VERDICT Pass on this offering, which feels like licensed toy marketing masquerading as early literature.
