Gr 4-6–The beauty of this novel and what sets it apart from other dog stories is that Ripley, a devoted German Shepherd, is the narrator and protagonist. Readers see the action through Ripley’s loyal eyes. A working dog in her younger years, Ripley worked with Max watching over the swamp and land and keeping danger out. When Max dies in an accident, he asks Ripley to watch over his girls, and Ripley takes her job seriously. Ripley does her best as she ages. Eventually, it becomes a bit harder for Riley to walk, and she experiences aches and pains she didn’t have as a pup. Fortunately, Ripley is surrounded by love and community as they begin to process saying goodbye, taking the dog on favorite outings to share what she’s always loved. Ripley knows she’s leaving them stronger; she kept her promise to Max, and she is proud. Heartbreakingly poignant, this tender middle grade book about grief, dying, love, friendship and pride truly stands apart in its exploration of these tough topics from a wise dog’s perspective. Tears will be shed, and tissues are needed. Back matter includes discussion questions that explore plot and character relationships and will inspire dialogue.
VERDICT A tearjerking realistic fiction read about love and loss that should be added to all middle grade collections.
