PreS-Gr 1—When Sam tosses his blanket from the top stair and commands, "Fly blanky fly!" it does, and so his adventure begins. On each spread, the blanket becomes something else: an airplane, a rocket, a kangaroo, a butterfly, and more. The boy helps things along by declaring, "Zoom blanky zoom!," "Hop blanky hop!," "Whoosh blanky whoosh!," etc. Finally, a tired Sam, all snug in bed, whispers, "Sleep blanky sleep." Lewis's rhythmic text is seamlessly integrated into Chavarri's lively illustrations. The roomy spreads have bold colors, fanciful depictions, and details such as blanky's stitching. With the words "FLY BLANKY FLY!" a boy and his blanket begin a nighttime adventure: "Zoom, zoom...like a jet flying through the sky. / ZOOM BLANKY ZOOM," etc. The text isn't as exuberant as the art; the book's modest pleasure lies in seeing the blanket physically transformed into a jet, a rocket, and so on. Finally, it's "Sleep blanky sleep."
