Gr 2-4–Fiona the fruit bat is scared to fly, but she finds courage within herself to spread her wings and leave the cave. Using echolocation, Fiona’s pep talk to herself is echoed back to her for extra-strength encouragement. Some pages of Riskin’s text are overly wordy because the book attempts to teach echolocation as well as present a moral of overcoming fear. Qiuqi’s artwork makes a dark cave seem warm and welcoming, as it would to a bat. She visually depicts echolocation with appealing gold and silver swirls. Back matter includes information about echolocation and fruit bats.
VERDICT A worthy purchase where bat collections are looking for a refresh.
