K-Gr 1–A brother and sister participate in field day at their school. They and their classmates play team games, experience minor disappointments, receive ribbons, get their faces painted, eat snacks, and, most importantly, don’t have any schoolwork. "Best day ever. Yay! Field day!" Digital illustrations include a diverse student group engaged in various organized outdoor activities that have stood the test of time, like the wheelbarrow race and parachute play. Notably, one child using crutches and leg braces and another using a wheelchair actively participate. The rhyming text and colorful pictures capture the well-known ups and downs of a traditional field day: the bummer of losing a shoe during a race or scraping a knee, and the joys of playing in a bounce house and having ice cream. As with Ransom’s other early readers about these siblings, this title is a sweet story that uses simple vocabulary to describe an experience familiar to most kids.
VERDICT A great choice for collections.
